Is it legal to be able to tap into personal email accounts as an employer?

I was recently told that my employer is recording all IMs and emails sent from our work computers. However i was also told that he can tap into our personal (yahoo) accounts. Someone printed out a personal email that i sent from my yahoo account and showed it to me as proof. is this legal/?
