Why is their so much attention on airport security?

Have you heard of 9/11 or the Sept. 11 attacks? If not, that's one of the main reasons for heightened airport security...and in case you didn't know, events like Super Bowls and the Times Square New Year's Eve Countdown also have enhanced security and are very aware that they could be targets for terrorists.
