Why do people want to use corn for ethanol instead of sugar beets?

corn is less effecent at making ethanol then sugar beets and more then half of the world uses sugar beets to produce ethanol where as 97% of the USA's comes from corn. By using corn we jack up our own food prices because almost everything has corn in it. Are we stupid?
