At what point do souls enter the human body?

I've always thought that while biology begins life, a soul nurtures that life and gives it purpose. In that premise not all living things have a soul until it finds a purpose for itself. So by definition, a soul would not be this ghost thing that enters a body but rather an inner light that is attained by the host being as it becomes aware of itself and the greater environment. I hope that makes sense :D
